CONSERVATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS

A grade II*-listed glasshouse built in 1894 by Richardson of Darlington along a heated spine wall with a central lantern and long side wings. The two outer wings had been demolished. The spine wall forms one side of a walled garden, originally a kitchen garden but now a flower garden. Brick bothies behind the spine wall house gardeners’ accommodation, boilers and storage.

The conservatory was disused and was in a very poor condition. We rebuilt the conservatory, reinstating the side wings. The structure was reinforced with steel and the outer wings were double-glazed. The bothies were remodelled with toilets, kitchen and education and display spaces. We installed new services and improved accessibility. The glasshouse is now used for functions and educational events.

I worked on this project while at Caroe Architecture.
