GARDEN BUILDINGS, NEW DESIGN IN HISTORIC CONTEXTS
A new garden building for a Victorian house in the central Cambridge conservation area. The design is a contemporary interpretation of a vernacular gabled outbuilding. The shape of the main volume draws upon the gabled forms of the area, and the orthogonal garden store volume reinterprets square bay windows on the street. The form reduces the volume of the building as much as possible while still providing a sense of spaciousness inside the workshop.
The contemporary style creates an interesting contrast with the context, and the charred and unfinished timber cladding echoes traditional black creosoted and silver weathered timber structures. The design evolved to meet planning requirements. The foundations were carefully designed to avoid damage to tree roots.
