CONSERVATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS, SUSTAINABLE RETROFIT

This grade I-listed mid-15th century barn has a timber structure including many large 13th century wall plates from other buildings and much original studwork. In 1904-10 the structure was extensively repaired. The floor and roof were in poor condition and the exterior was clad in softwood in the late 1990s.

My client wanted to refurbish the barn to allow more flexible use, retaining the agricultural feel as far as possible. The timber frame was repaired and an insulated heated limecrete floor with York stone flags installed. Wood fibre insulation was fitted to the walls and roof. The walls were re-clad and the roof re-tiled.

The barn is now used for displays and events, including wedding receptions.

I worked on this project while at Freeland Rees Roberts.
